An hour behind schedule, we land at 6:30am. I don't know whether I'm hungover or tired or both. I watch the luggage belt rotate and pray that both of my bags have made it to Kolkata. I'm also massively regretting my decision to have not booked my accommodation. But, I had been told by a few locals in Mumbai that I wanted to stay on or around a Park Street. Carrying both my bags, I navigate toward the prepaid taxi rank and head toward Park Street. I explain to the taxi driver ‘any hotel’ whilst he stops at traffic lights, opens his car door slightly and leans out to spit paan. Once we've reached Park Street, he takes a right close to the Indian Museum and stops outside ‘Hotel International VIP’, they have rooms available for a rate of 4000 rupees. I realise very quickly the because I have been on a tour I have no idea what a reasonable rate is. My room is available immediately and I hand over money for two nights. Three men feel the need to help me carry my bag, I'm too tired to realise why until I get to my room. They're sorely mistaken if they're all getting a good tip. I split 60 rupees between the three of them, the only English word they appear to speak and understand is ‘tip’. Funny that.
My room is surprisingly nice. A large queen size bed, flat screen TV, AC, ensuite with a bath (which evidentially hasn't been used in a long while). I collapse onto the bed and don't wake up until 1pm. It's a hangover, probably not helped by the lack of sleep. I order room service, watch films, book a Kolkata day tour for the next day and sleep for the rest of the day.
