Breakfast in the hotel in included so we both make it downstairs for breakfast before I finishes at 9am. While we're eating Hamish and Becs walk in. They have the same idea as us; eat the included food and go back to sleep.
11am and Annlee and I wake up. Annlee makes tea and we flick to see whether there are any decent channels. There aren't.
Annlee orders room service. A pretty decent club sandwich. It comes with fries and a large fruit salad. And then orders a movie from box office; The Truman Show. She had never seen it! With most of the day spent dozing we agree by 5pm that we should probably go see some of the city.
We take the bus into town and get off in sight of the drum tower and bell tower. A quick right and right again and we make it into the Muslim quarter, amongst the incredibly busy food stalls. There's stall as far as the eye can see and it's so busy that stewards are directing people to walk on a certain side of the road in each direction. Annlee says if I'm to only one thing from the stalls (she clearly doesn't know me yet) then it has to be this shredded beef sandwich she had the night before. There a long queue and a young guy is taking the money while giving people tickets to hand over to the guy behind the stall. I watch the server take a hunk of meat from a large bubbling pot, throw it down onto a thick round wooden board that has a metal shield surrounding half of it, and he finely chops the meat. Next from his right he takes a toasted bun, that's pre sliced, and smothers the inside of it with chilli oil. Using the large surface of the knife he piles meat into the bun and then ladles the juice from the saucepan into the bun. Whilst queuing I watch this over and over, practically salivating. God help me if someone tried to queue jump. The sandwich was amazing! We make a tactical decision to walk the length of the street to see what really stands out so that we don't eat at the first four stalls and see no more. After the sandwich Annlee bought a deep fried banana, I bought fried potato balls. The man cooked them with spring onion, brown sugar, garlic, chilli and salt. These were also divine. Craving some desert, we tried out the rice pudding type dish which had a sprinkling of chocolate on it. This was ok, although he had rose water in it which we were both weren't fans of. There's a soup dish in Xian that I was told to try. It's made with chopped bread in the bottom and is served with spring onion, noodles, beef and soup. As we were leaving we saw a stall selling it so decided to share a bowl. It wasn't bad, and it got tastier the more you ate it, but wasn't great.
Heading back to the bus stop, it started to rain and rather conveniently, my desert craving not satisfied, we were passing Hagen Daaz. I had an offensively large ice cream while Annlee had tea, after mistakenly ordering a green tea cafe latte- she really loves tea. The rain doesn't show any signs of easing up so we get the bus back to the hotel.
I google back at the hotel to see what the formal names of the things we had eaten were and only managed to pull up some info on the sandwich; it's informally known as a Chinese hamburger. Usually served with pork but as we’re the Muslim quarter, it was beef. I add the Chinese hamburger to my new food list- with the dried beef, and sleep.
